Guatemala has many volcanoes you can climb, but because of its proximity to Antigua, safety and accessibility the Pacaya volcano tour is one of the more popular hikes. Pacaya is an active volcano but in a dormant state at the moment. You can still see the evidence of recent lava flows. At the moment there is no lava, but you can see steam coming out of holes in the ground, hot enough to roast marshmallows. The hike itself will give you beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and the volcanoes Fuego, Agua and Acatenango.
We will pick you up from your hotel in Antigua. The drive to the volcano takes about 1 hour. Here your private guide will be waiting for you and you start the hike. It’s a 2 to 2.5 hour walk up the volcano, stopping a various view points. The guide will give you information about the history of the area and the volcano. You will go as far up as safety allows, as close as possible to the crater. Take a rest at the top, roast some marshmallows, and when you are ready you will make your way back to the starting point. The driver will be waiting for you and drive you back to your hotel in Antigua.
Because this is a private tour you can decide the time you want to go. In rainy season we recommend to go early in the morning because the views will be better. Bring good hiking shoes and a fleece jacket.
After the Pacaya volcano tour you can also visit thermal hot springs and spa, where you will have the chance to eat lunch, soak in the thermal baths and take a massage (not included in the price).
