Learn Spanish and Travel | 3 weeks | Shared tour

Do you want to learn Spanish in Guatemala, do lots of activities and also travel around Guatemala? Then this is the trip for you. The package includes 2 weeks of private Spanish classes at a local school in Antigua Guatemala. During your classes you will be staying at a host family in a private room with almost all meals included. The last week you will travel to Lake Atitlan and you will end the trip relaxing at the beach for a couple of days.

Activities

We also have a lot of activities included, both during your course and in the last week. For example, you take an exciting camping trip to Acatenango.  There will be visits to markets, chocolate making workshops and a tour to the villages around Lake Atitlan.

About the Spanish course

The Spanish classes are private so you can be sure the classes will be at your level of Spanish and you can focus on the learning goals you want to achieve. Living with a host family will give you lots of chances to practice your Spanish. Have a look at the day to day itinerary to see all the activities this tour includes.

Day to day itinerary

This week you will have Spanish classes Monday to Friday from 8 am to 12 pm. You will stay with a local family where you will get 3 meals a day from Monday through Friday and breakfast on Saturday. During the weekdays we added several fun activities

Saturday

Upon arrival to the airport we will arrange a private transfer to your host family in Antigua. You will stay with the family for 14 nights and have your own room but you will share the bathroom. You can pay extra for a private bathroom. If you arrive before Saturday we can arrange extra nights.

Sunday morning

Today you will meet and get to know the other participants, we will take a hike to Cerro de la Cruz for a nice view of the town and afterwards have a smoothie in a local restaurant in Antigua.

Monday

Your first day of classes! You are expected to be at the school at 8 am. You will meet your teacher for the coming 2 weeks. Classes are from 8 am to 12 noon, but there is a 30 minute break in the middle. The afternoon is free, not counting homework :).

Tuesday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm. In the afternoon you will take a tour to the Pacaya volcano. The bus will pick you up at 2 pm from your family’s house. It will be a 1.5 hour drive to the starting point. From there you will hike up the volcano for about 2 hours. With a bit of luck you will see some lava because Pacaya is very active volcano. After sunset you all hike down, where the bus will be waiting to take you back to Antigua.

Wednesday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm. The afternoon is free.

Thursday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm. In the afternoon you take part in a chocolate making workshop. You get to keep and eat all the chocolates you make!

Friday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm. The afternoon is free.

This week you will have Spanish classes Monday to Friday from 8 to 12. You will stay with a local family where you will get 3 meals a day from Monday through Friday and breakfast on Saturday. On Saturday and Sunday you take a camping trip on the Acatenango volcano.

Saturday and Sunday

This weekend you go on a overnight camping trip to the Acatenango volcano. The bus will pick you up at your host family’s house between 9 am and 9:30 am. From there it will be a 1 hour drive to where you start the hike. It will be a strenuous hike of about 5 to 6 hours, but the beautiful views will be your reward. When you get to the base camp, the tent is already set up. Watch the sunset and have dinner by the campfire. The next morning the guide will wake you up at 4 am for the a 1.5 hour hike all the way to the summit. Here you will be right in front of the very active Fuego volcano and there will be amazing views all around. After about 30 minutes on the top you hike down and you are back in Antigua around 1 pm.

Please note: this is a difficult hike and you do have to be in reasonable shape. If you feel you are not up to it, you can do a coffee tour on Saturday instead. But we need to know this 2 days before the start of the trip. Less then two days before it will not be possible to change.

Monday

Classes are from 8 am to 12 noon, but there is a 30 minute break in the middle.

The afternoon is free.

Tuesday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm.

In the afternoon a Salsa class at a local Salsa school in Antigua.

Wednesday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm.

The afternoon is free.

Thursday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm.

In the afternoon you will visit a village around Antigua for a typical burlap making workshop.

Friday

In the morning Spanish classes from 8 am to 12 pm.

The afternoon is free.

No Spanish classes this week, only fun! You will visit Lake Atitlan and end the week on the beach. Accommodation will be in hostel in a shared room. For a surcharge you can request a private room. The following tours and transfers are included:

Saturday

At 12:30 pm a shuttle will pick you up from your host family for a 3 hour drive to Lake Atitlan. The next 3 days you will stay at a hostel with a swimming pool. Breakfast is included.

Sunday

You will visit the famous market of Chichicastenango. We include round trip transportation from Panajachel to the Chichicastenango market and back to Panajachel. The visit is about 4 hours and unguided.

Monday

You take a boat trip on the lake visiting 3 villages. The boat trip is with a local English Speaking guide and you will go to San Juan, San Pedro and Santiago.

Tuesday

Relax in the morning. At 4 pm you will take a shuttle back to Antigua where you will stay in a hostel for one night, before an early morning departure the next day to El Paradon. The stop in Antigua is necessary because there are no direct buses between the lake and El Paradon.

Wednesday through Friday

Breakfast is not included because the shuttle picks you up at 6 am to go to El Paradon beach. Here you will stay for 3 nights at a local beach side hotel (dorm accommodation). Three full days to relax a the beach. During these last 3 days no meals are included.

The tour ends on Saturday morning at El Paradon beach. Please note that check-out is at 11 am. We can arrange transportation back to Antigua upon request.

Included in the Learn Spanish and Travel in Guatemala trip:

  • Airport transfer (private)
  • 2 week private Spanish course in Antigua from Monday through Friday from 8 am to 12 pm.

The tour ends in El Paradon. We can arrange a shuttle back to Antigua for $12. This is not included because you might want to spend extra nights there.

If you want to book you can fill our the reservation form. We require full payment 4 weeks before the start day of the tour, but a deposit is not necessary. We also do not charge a reservation fee.

Please note that there are no minimum number of participants. That means that if you book alone, you might be the only one, but we can still offer all services as mentioned. You will meet other people at the school, the host  family, the hostels and activities will usually be joined by others (not through this tour).

  • The Spanish classes in Antigua are from 8 am to 12 pm. With a half hour break in the middle, so it will come down to 3.5 hours a day.
  • The lessons take place in an outside patio, so bring a sweater because sometimes the mornings are chilly in Antigua Guatemala and during the Spanish lesson you will sit still a lot. It almost never rains in the mornings in Guatemala, even in rainy season. More information about the average temperature and rainfall you can find here.
  • You should bring a notebook, pen and if possible a small dictionary.
  • There will be WiFi at the school. We can not guarantee there will be (good) WiFi at the host family’s house. We recommend to buy a local sim card for your phone during your stay. The 3G network is pretty good in Antigua. This costs about 100-150 Q.
  • Almost all the tours and activities that are part of this trip can have participants who are not necessarily part of this particular tour.
  • Our company is based in Antigua so we will always be nearby in case of a problem or emergency.
  • After payment we will send you a detailed packing list, the information about the school, travel info about the places you will visit. The school will usually send us the name and address of the host family in Antigua about 2 weeks before departure.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

You will be staying at a local family in simple but clean housing. You get your own room, but will usually share the bathroom.

You will eat tipical meals with the family which in the morning and eveving usually means beans, eggs, tortillas, some fruit and coffee. In the afternoon they eat a hot meals, which could be  meat, pasta or rice and some vegetables. The families can cater to vegetarians. And they have experience cooking for foreigners.

No, overbody can join, from beginner to advanced Spanish. Everybody gets their own teacher, the lessons are one on one.

The first day of class the teacher will determine your level of Spanish by talking to you, and will ask you what you would like to focus on (grammar, conversation etc.)

Sometimes it just happens that personalities don’t match. We realize these things happen and are not personal. You can let us or the administrator of the school know, and we will assign you a different teacher.

Your flight can arrive at any time. The driver will be  waiting for you at the passenger exit holding a sign with your name on it. You will get dropped off at your host family.

To travel between places we use safe minibuses especially for tourists. They will pick you up at your hotel/address, but sometimes they will drop you off at a central location and you might have to walk a little bit to your hotel.It is therefore recommended to bring a backpack or a suitcase with wheels. We will give you detailed instructions on the location of the host family and hostels locations before depature.

Anybody over 18 can join this tour. Any level of Spanish.
